Humanities Majors
Choose from a wide range of majors in languages, literatures and cultures and real-world degree options.

Africana Studies
The Africana Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary major, a minor in hip-hop cultures, and internships and study abroad opportunities. The program is a leader in online education and digital humanities.
Applied Humanities
The Applied Humanities major offers both incoming and transfer students a degree combining humanities with professional disciplines in 11 study areas including business, healthcare, design and more.
Classics
The Classics major examines the languages, literatures, cultures, art, history, religion, and material remains of the ancient Mediterranean world and their ongoing global impact.
East Asian Studies
Chinese and Japanese majors may choose either the Language emphasis, focusing on verbal and written communication, or Culture emphasis, focusing on tradition and transformation in the world’s second largest economy. Advanced Korean is also offered.
French
The long-standing (and ever-popular) French program consists of two tracks, French Language, Literatures & Cultures, focusing on the acquisition of language skills and cultural competency, or French & Francophone Studies, with advanced courses taught in English.
German Studies
The German Studies major is designed to familiarize students with the German language as well as the cultures and histories of German-speaking communities. It’s the 7th largest German program in the U.S.
Interdisciplinary Studies
Both incoming and transfer students can take advantage of this flexible degree program with six interest areas: Arts, Media, & Entertainment; Economy & Industry; Global & Intercultural Understanding; Science, Technology, Health, & Society; Social Behavior & Human Understanding; Sports & Society.
Italian
The largest Italian program in the U.S. consists of two tracks, Italian Language & Literature, focusing on the acquisition of language skills and cultural competency, or Italian Studies, with advanced courses taught in English.
Religious Studies
The Religious Studies major provides students with a broad understanding of human diversity, the complexities of social and cultural systems of thought, and the human pursuit of meaning.
Russian & Slavic Studies
The Russian major is designed to develop competence in Russian language, awareness of cultural traditions, and an understanding of literature and the arts. It’s the fourth largest Russian program in the U.S.
Spanish & Portuguese
One of the largest Spanish programs in the country, offering students a variety of tracks that employ cutting-edge approaches to language acquisition, cultural exploration and linguistic investigation.
World Literature
The World Literature major gives students the opportunity to combine intensive foreign language study with their interests in ancient and modern literatures based on regions, nations, or topical studies.
