“I see the past, Mamie and my father Pedro, touching the present, these students, who will impact the future. When you see the kinds of career paths these young scholars are taking, you know there’s a huge impact. We all have the ability to change the world and with the scholarship, hopefully we’ve given the students the tools they need to really make a difference.”
The Mamie Bernard Aguirre and Pedro Joab Aguirre Scholarship is one of our longest-running, continuous scholarships, established in 1987 by Rowene Aguirre-Medina and others in her family. Recipients are upper-division students majoring in Spanish who have demonstrated an interest in the advancement of women in education, with preference given to students who are returning to school. Born in 1844, Mary "Mamie" Bernard Aguirre was an early Arizona pioneer who became the first Spanish teacher at the University of Arizona. Her grandson Pedro, Rowene's father, was born in Tucson in 1908 and became a successful businessman in the Mexicali Valley, living on both sides of the border. Rowene received her BA in Education and Speech in 1963, and she has an enduring commitment and deep love for her University of Arizona roots.
The humanities have never been more important, for the students of today and tomorrow, and for the world at large. We are educating the future leaders of the global economy. Students who choose the Humanities will graduate with a broad and versatile set of skills, ready to change the world. The College of Humanities’ vision is to elevate lives, careers, and communities through innovative and fearless inquiries into the diversity of human belief, language, literature, and culture. Help us make that vision a reality at the University of Arizona.
